I really struggled to find my Lovemarks, because I really
don't buy a lot of things myself. But the one I thought of was Victoria's
Secret. I absolutely love this brand. I love their under wear, bras, pants,
perfumes, EVERYTHING! I really never had any reason to go in that store, because
they are sooo expensive. But when I was little I always equated that store with
beauty. And thought, one day I will be able to buy something in there, and I too
will be beautiful. Stupid right?
It wasn’t until now
that I realized that there is no reason to like the brand, it’s just a bunch of
expensive clothes. But I couldn’t help it, and their advertising campaign made this
happen. The giant posters in the windows
of the store are of beautiful thin models in the Victoria’s Secret’s products.
And their catalog that come in the mail, in every picture, models wearing the
clothing. And the commercials on T.V. same thing. This started to make me
think, why are all of these bras, under wear, swim suits, etc. are on these
tiny very beautiful women, especially since it is specifically market toward
women? We don’t need to see that stuff right?
Wrong, that is where they get you. NO body looks like that, it’s
all photo shopped and airbrushed, and our logical brain knows this. Our
emotional brain however yearns to look like those women. I know crazy right?
Why would we want to look like that? Because if we look like THAT we will get
hot guys. That is one plausible answer,
but I think it is a little deeper than that. I think that it might have to do with the fact
that men see these images of women. So then the men who see these pictures have
unrealistic of ideals of what women should look like. But that is really sounds
one sided, it defiantly goes both ways. But I think the most disturbing part of Victoria’s
Secret campaign is the commercials. The commercial for their “Body” campaign, it
is for their Body bra. I am not really sure why this bra is special it just
looks like a normal bra. But the ad its self has kind of a play one words. It says “Love Your Body”, they are obviously
talking about the bra, but on a deeper level they are talking about the person
loving their body. But can you really
love your body if you are comparing yourself to those models? It is really hard
to, but maybe if you buy the new Body bra you will get closer to attaining that.
Obviously all you need to sell bras to women is to put
beautiful models together and surround them in pink, and tell them where to buy
it, and they will. AMAZING!
Sarcasm aside it is true because they play on our emotional
attachment of what beauty is, and this makes them money. I know I still buy
clothes from them even though I know this.
